Making matters more complicated, acts of silencing can take place not only when the lives of women, queer subjects, and others are omitted altogether from historical records but when they are poorly transcribed, confusingly categorized, or distorted by projecting present terms and values onto past lives. This course considers the acts necessary to build, use, and sustain queer and feminist archives by adopting two tasks.
First, the course introduces students to theoretical writings on the ways archives document and preserve information related to gender and sexuality, with emphasis on materials related to musical and performing arts.

Please bring the reader to every class as we will be working with the texts directly. We will often focus on specific passages or excerpts which I will designate and provide page numbers on Canvas. Further media and additional readings are posted on Canvas, as well as Spotify and Youtube playlists that will be updated throughout the quarter.
This requires sensitivity from both those who are more and less inclined to speak in class and is key to fostering a respective and critical learning environment. This course is designed to encourage collaborative efforts between students and instructor on shaping the course throughout the quarter. While I will spend the first part of class introducing and providing theoretical context of the readings, the majority of class time will rely on your active engagement and criticality. To encourage active engagement and listening, no laptops, tablets, or cell phones are to be used during class.
